Did You Know?
According to the United States Coast Guard, there are over 8,000 boating accidents each year. Over 700 fatalities and tens of thousands of serious injuries occur every year as a result of capsizes, falls overboard, disappearances, fire, sinking, flooding, explosions and collisions with other vessels
How to File an Auto Insurance Claim If your car is involved in an accident, damaged by fire, flood, vandalism, or when it is stolen, the insurance claim process is started by taking the following steps:
- Phone your auto insurance agent
Call your auto insurance agent as soon as possible following an auto accident you are involved in, even if you're far from home and even if someone else caused the accident. Ask the agent how to proceed with your insurance claim and what paperwork will be needed to support the claim. Your auto insurance company may require a "proof of loss" form, as well as other paperwork related to the claim, such as related medical bills, auto repair bills and a copy of the police report from the accident you are filing the claim for.
- Supply the information your auto insurance company needs
Work with your insurance company in its investigation in any settlement or legal defense of any auto insurance claim. Make copies of all paperwork related to the auto accident and pass on any copies of all legal papers you receive in connection with your insured loss. Your auto insurance company will represent you if a claim is brought against you and defend you if you are sued as the result of an accident.
- Keep records of your expenses
Expenses incurred as a direct result of any automobile accident may be reimbursed under your auto insurance policy. Remember that most no-fault auto insurance will usually pay your medical and hospital expenses and even some additional costs such as lost wages.
- Keep copies of all of your auto accident paper work
Store copies of all related auto accident paper work in your own auto insurance files.
- Ask your auto insurance agent about any time-limited events in your policy
- Does my policy have time limits for filing claims or submitting bills?
- Is there a time limit for resolving my claims disputes?
- Is there a time limit to submit additional information?
- When can I expect the insurance company to contact me?
- Do I need to get repair estimates for the damage to my car? If so, how soon?
- Does my policy pay for a rental car while my car is being repaired? If so, how much and for how long am I covered?
